Week 7 Football: United 55, Cigarroa 2

Football fans at the SAC on Friday night were treated to an explosive episode of The Billy Williams III Show.
The talented junior United running back racked up 303 yards of total offense as he led his team to a 55-2 victory over the Cigarroa Toros.
United is now 6-0 in District 29-5A, 6-1 overall. Cigarroa fell to 3-3, 4-3.
Williams accounted for a majority of his team's yards, rushing for 267 and five scores on 25 attempts (averaging more than 10 yards per carry) and catching four passes for 36 yards.
The emergence of Williams came in response to a superb job by the Cigarroa defense at shutting down United’s deep threat passing game.
Toros safety Jose Garcia was especially impressive as he got a hand on and almost intercepted three early deep passing attempts by United senior quarterback Tony Salas.
Salas rebounded from a 50 percent first-half completion rate to completing 14 of 25 attempts on the night for 185 yards, no scores and no turnovers.
The quarterback also showed flashes of speed by carrying the ball three times for 38 yards, including a six-yard touchdown.
United wide receiver Sergio Ramos also got in on the running game by scoring on a 1-yard scamper as a reward for pulling in a reception that set his team up inches away from the goal line.
Ramos led the team in receiving with 90 yards on six receptions.
United put its backups into the rotation late in the game and quarterback Joey Zepeda found Gus Garza on a 10-yard touchdown strike midway through the fourth quarter; the only passing touchdown of the night for Longhorns.
Zepeda completed three of five passes for 35 yards in his limited playing time.
Cigarroa got the defensive performance it was looking for early in the game when it held United to 27 first-half points and returned a blocked extra point 100 yards to put its lone two points on the board.
The Toros offense, however, failed to find any consistency against a stingy Longhorn defensive unit.
Cigarroa gained only 16 rushing yards and finished the game with 132 total yards of offense, a far cry from the 551 yards of offense accumulated by the Longhorns.
Toros quarterback Victor Martinez contributed 116 yards of offense through the air by completing 16 of his 29 passes with neither any scores or turnovers.
Cigarroa's lead running back was Jesse Sanchez, who had 15 yards on eight carries. Ramon Flores, a new name on the Cigarroa roster, led his team in receiving with 56 yards on three catches.

10.15.10: Volleyball: United 3, Cigarroa 1

The Lady Longhorns won, 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16. United improved to 11-4 in District 29-5A, 18-14 overall. Cigarroa fell to 8-7, 21-15. Leading the way for United was Anabeli Fernades (10 kills, six digs), Natalie Chavez (11 kills, 15 assists, eight points, 11 digs), Ashley Everett (nine kills, 10 points, nine digs) and Kristen Ovalle (17 assists, five digs). Leading the way for Cigarroa was Gloria Morales (eight kills, seven blocks), Sandra Ambriz (10 kills, six digs), Deandra Gonzalez (seven points, seven kills), Raquel Martinez (nine assists).

10.12.10: Volleyball: Alexander 3, Cigarroa 1

The Alexander Lady Bulldogs' dominance of the Gateway City schools continued with a hard-fought victory over Cigarroa at Alexander on Tuesday night.
Alexander beat Cigarroa in four games, 25-10, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-13, to take a strong hold of second place in District 29-5A after United was upset by Nixon earlier in the night.
The Lady Bulldogs dominated every facet of the game with great net play that stopped any Cigarroa offensive momentum.
Alexander (12-2 29-5A, 26-5) came out with offensive firepower that found the holes in the Cigarroa (8-6, 21-14) defense.
While Alexander's season is making a march toward the postseason, the Lady Toros' season is slowly slipping away with the loss to Alexander and just four games remaining in the regular season.
Cigarroa entered tied with Nixon for the fourth spot in district, but now faces a tough climb after Nixon’s win and its loss. The two teams split their regular season series.

Week 6 Football: Alexander 62, Cigarroa 8

The Cigarroa Toros met with the Alexander Bulldogs Thursday night for what was supposed to be a great battle between teams with identical 3-1 District 29-5A records.
To the surprise of those in attendance, the battle looked a lot more like a Spanish bullfight, as numerous scuffles broke out during the night, culminating in a second half bench-clearing brawl that resulted in two players being ejected from the game.
While Alexander was victorious, 62-8, its dominating win was plagued by the turn of events late in the game at the SAC.
"All I can say is we’ve never, since we started this season, since my time began at Alexander, this is my fifth year there, I've never had anything like that happen to me," said Alexander head football coach Joel Lopez.
All told, there were 28 flags thrown over the course of the game, 12 of which were personal fouls. Each team picked up a roughly even number of flags over the course of the night.
"As soon as we went ahead, those things started happening … that's never happened to our guys," Lopez said. "I know they (Cigarroa) have had a scuffle in scrimmages … I don’t know! I don't know. We tried to hold our guys back and keep them out of that."
The biggest breakdown came near the end of the third quarter when Alexander junior quarterback Brian Swain scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to take a 56-8 lead over Cigarroa.
The players on the field from both teams began fighting each other in a skirmish that took place between the end zone and the 20-yard line on the side of the field closest to the Cigarroa bench.
Many Toros players ran past their coaches, who were trying to keep them on the sideline, into the brawl.
Bulldogs players, who were on the far sideline from the fight, mostly stayed off the field as coaches, referees and district personnel separated the two teams.
The results were the ejections of Cigarroa defensive back Jesus Sanchez and Swain.
"Both teams were playing emotionally high," Cigarroa coach Frank De Hoyos said. "It was on both teams. When the referees don't control the game, things get out of hand. When officials don't throw the flag and kids are hitting each other after the whistle, it creates a problem. It has to do with both sides, Alexander and Cigarroa. We don't teach that and I'm sure Mr. Lopez at Alexander doesn't teach that.
"I can’t speak for Mr. Lopez, but we will address it."
Each school district is responsible for the policing of its players following such an altercation.
The fighting was the lowest point of a night where just about everything went right for Alexander while everything went wrong for Cigarroa.
Cigarroa, which had thrived early in its season by forcing turnovers and earning defensive scores, accomplished neither against the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs punted only once on offense, scoring either touchdowns or field goals on every other offensive possession.
The Toros fell to 3-2 in district, 4-2 overall. The Bulldogs improved to 4-1, 5-1.

10.09.10: Volleyball: Cigarroa 3, LBJ 0

The Lady Toros swept, 25-11, 25-11, 25-10. Cigarroa improved to 8-5 in District 29-5A, 21-13 overall. LBJ fell to 2-11, 6-20. Leading the way for Cigarroa was Gloria Morales (eight kills), Deandra Gonzalez (seven kills, six points), Sandra Ambriz (eight digs, four kills, four aces), Michelle Alvarez (11 points, five digs, four blocks), Elizabeth Sanchez (12 digs).

10.05.10: Volleyball: Winn 3, Cigarroa 1

Week 5 Football: LBJ 14, Cigarroa 0

The towering lights seemed to serve as the pillars that held up the cloudless blue sky at the SAC on Thursday night as the two stingiest defenses in District 29-5A met on the gridiron.

It was LBJ, however, that bested previously undefeated Cigarroa, as senior running back Ricky Flores paved the way for a 14-0 win.

The Wolves improved to 2-2 in 29-5A, 3-2 overall, and matched the program's high for a win total in a single season.

The Toros tasted defeat for the first time, falling to 3-1 in 29-5A, 4-1 overall.

The Toros poisoned themselves with penalty after penalty at the start, while the Wolves eventually implemented their slobber knocking run game down Cigarroa’s throat.

Cigarroa began the night with the first possession, but self-destructed every drive with botched snaps, fumbles and three-and-outs. The Toros punted their first two drives and fumbled their third.

The Toros finished the game, behind the play of junior quarterback Victor Martinez, with 108 yards of total offense, but lost 35 yards from penalties and also accounted for two fumbles and two interceptions.

Nothing could dig them out of the hole they had dug themselves.

Flores' Wolves capitalized enough to muster two touchdowns, one in the closing minutes of the first half by senior quarterback Juan Perez on a 48-yard keeper, and the other in the third quarter on a Flores run.

The Wolves juggled between two basic offensive attack tactics: the off-tackle toss plays or the straight-up-the-gut dives by mostly Flores, who was forced to make a fashionably late entrance due to missing Monday’s practice.

He didn't get his first rep until the first LBJ play of the second quarter.

The Wolves took the ball away and shut down the Toro offense by muscling their offensive line and rushing Martinez’s pass timing.

Then the offense handed the ball securely to Flores, allowing him to take out his aggression on his opposition.

He finished with 119 rush yards in just three quarters of play.

10.02.10: Volleyball: Cigarroa 3, Martin 0

The Lady Toros swept, 25-19, 25-16, 24-16. Cigarroa improved to 7-4 in District 29-5A, 20-12 overall. Martin fell to 1-10, 11-15. Leading the way for Cigarroa was Gloria Morales (nine kills, four blocks), Mara Martinez (eight kills, two blocks) and Michelle Alvarez (four points, seven kills, four digs).

09.28.2010: Volleyball: Nixon 3, Cigarroa 1

With fourth place in District 29-5A volleyball on the line, Cigarroa and Nixon squared off in a packed house at the Cigarroa gymnasium Tuesday night.
Nixon came into the game with a mission, to stay in the playoff race, and it accomplished that with a 3-1 defeat of Cigarroa, 25-10, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-22.
The Lady Mustangs moved into a tie with Cigarroa for fourth place. Both stand at 6-4 in district play. The season series between the two is split, 1-1.
Nixon's Rosalynn Velasquez put the fate of the team on her back with a 22-kill performance that was backed by Sammie Garcia's 10 kills.

Week 4: Football: Cigarroa 17, C.C. Winn 10

Cigarroa and C.C. Winn entered their Saturday night District 29-5A game as a curious duo.

One team had won its past two games with final-minute scores, while the other had lost its last two by a combined three points.

Surprise, surprise, the Toros won Saturday's affair at the SAC by a single possession, with a final score of 17-10, to advance to 4-0 on the season and undefeated in district at 3-0.

The Toros are tied with United for first place in 29-5A at 3-0.

Winn remained winless and fell to 0-3 in district, 0-4 overall.

It was a defensive battle through and through.

Each team held its opponent to only seven first downs on the night and all of the scoring came early as the defenses continued to stiffen down the stretch.

Cigarroa's defense held C.C. Winn to 219 rushing yards, a large chunk of which came on an 88-yard touchdown run down the middle of the field by Mavericks running back Luvin De Leon in the first half.

C.C. Winn's only other score came on a field goal late in the first quarter after a Cigarroa fumble gave the Mavericks the ball at the Toros' 16-yard line.

Cigarroa QB Victor Martinez finished the game with 71 passing yards, completing five of 13 passes for one touchdown and throwing for two interceptions.

The junior quarterback also led the team in rushing yards and attempts with 33 yards on 17 carries.

Mike Benavidez' two catches for 32 yards and a touchdown were the most yards and catches by any Toros receiver.

09.25.2010: Volleyball: Cigarroa 3, Del Rio 1

The Lady Toros won, 25-17, 25-16, 11-25, 25-12. Cigarroa improved to 6-3 in District 29-5A, 19-11 overall. Del Rio fell to 4-5, 9-9. Leading the way for Cigarroa was Sandra Ambriz (six points, 13 kills), Michelle Alvarez (nine points, 15 assists, six digs), Deandra Gonzalez (seven aces, 11 points, five kills, nine digs), Gloria Morales (nine kills) and Lety Reyes (six blocks).

Week 3: Football: Cigarroa 14, Martin 7

Cigarroa did it again.

With the score tied at 7 and time dwindling in the fourth quarter, the Toros drove 47 yards down the field and scored the game-winning touchdown with a just over a minute left on the clock to give them a 14-7 victory over the Martin Tigers at Krueger Field on Friday night.

Cigarroa, winless a year ago, improved to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in District 29-5A. Martin fell to 0-3, 0-2.

The Toros won last week over Nixon via a touchdown with four seconds remaining in that game.

The night's final scoring play for the Toros was reminiscent of a week ago. Once again, it was a pass from quarterback Victor Martinez that sealed the win.

Martinez found wide receiver Samuel Macias for the game-winning 15 yard touchdown completion.

Martinez finished the game with 49 passing yards on 6 of 11 passing. He threw for one touchdown and for one interception.

Cigarroa's other touchdown was delivered by the defensive side of the ball. Early in the first half ,the Toros 'Wrecking Crew' defense forced Martin quarterback Luis Diaz-Deleon to fumble on a sack. Safety Jesus Sanchez scooped up the ball and housed it for six.

Sanchez also came through with an interception of Diaz-Deleon in the final minute of the game to end Martin's final furious drive and seal the Cigarroa victory.

The Cigarroa defense held Martin to 92 yards of total offense. Cigarroa managed 153.

Diaz-Deleon was held to just 41 passing yards. He completed 6 of 14 passes and was picked off once.

Martin's Luis Estevis, a recent addition to the team, led the team in receiving yards with 22 off two catches.

Alex Alvarado led the Tigers in rushing with 24 yards on four carries. Rudy Castillo also did well out of the Tigers backfield with 17 yards and a touchdown on three carries, though he didn't touch the ball a single time in the second half.

The Toros let eight different backs carry the ball for a total of 104 yards on the ground.

Martinez led the team in carries with 17 carries for 37 yards, including scampers of 20 and 23, respectively.

Power back Jesse Sanchez led the Toros in total yards with 44 on nine touches.

Cigarroa is the lone undefeated team in Laredo.

09.18.2010: Volleyball: Cigarroa 3, United South 1

Cigarroa had a turbulent week that saw it drop consecutive District 29-5A games, but Saturday afternoon, the Toros looked like the Toros of old.

The Lady Toros beat Southside rival,United South in four games, 25-9, 15-25, 25-9 and 27-25 at the Cigarroa gymnasium.

Cigarroa (5-2 29-5A, 18-11) is two games behind district leader Eagle Pass, which is undefeated in district play, while the Lady Panthers (0-7, 7-14) are still searching for their first win of the district season.

United South had to take the court without its head coach Andrea Pierce-Garza, who is out on maternity leave due to the birth of her daughter, Madeline Jade Garza, who weighs 8 lbs, 13 oz, on Sept. 16.

Jessica Ramirez, the varsity assistant, has been named the interim head coach until the return of Pierce-Garza in a few weeks.

Cigarroa also had to take the court with a new lineup because a rash of injuries and sickness hit the team earlier in the week.

Cigarroa did a great job of adjusting without the service of their starting setters, Raquel Martinez and Dee Dee Riojas.

Stepping in to fill those shoes were senior Michelle Alvarez and junior Sandra Ambriz.

The Lady Toros did not skip a beat with Alvarez and Ambriz at the helm as they set the tone for the game with an overall offensive effort that blitzed the Lady Panthers’ defense all afternoon long.

Alvarez pulled double duty and came through on the offensive end for the Lady Toros.

United South could not find an answer for Alvarez, who had a team-high 12 kills, with five coming in the first game.

Alvarez became an offensive nightmare for the Lady Panthers, along with Deandra Gonzalez and Gloria Morales, who combined for 13 kills.

CIGARROA STATS: Genesis Delgado (13 points, 10 digs), Elizabeth Sanchez (eight points, one kill, eight digs), Deandra Delgado (14 points, six kills, 17 digs), Michelle Alvarez (four points, 12 kills, one block, nine assists, one dig), Sandra Ambriz (14 points, four kills, 11 assists, three blocks), Mara Martinez (five points), Gloria Morales (seven kills, three blocks), Alejandra Reyes (eight blocks) and Vilma Rodriguez (five digs).

Week 2 Football: Cigarroa 28, Nixon 24

The Nixon Mustangs and the Cigarroa Toros met at the SAC on Saturday night with both teams having something to prove.

The result was a down to the wire thriller.

The Mustangs thought they had put the final nail in the coffin when they recovered a Cigarroa fumble and took a three-point lead over the Toros in the final minute of play, but the boys from Cigarroa weren’t done yet.

With 56 seconds on the clock, the Toros returned the kickoff to their own 45 and then drove down the field to score a touchdown in the final four seconds to recapture the lead and pull off the wild win by a final score of 28-24.

Cigarroa improved to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in District 29-5A. Nixon fell to 0-2, 0-1.

The deciding play of the game was a stellar 20-yard touchdown strike from Cigarroa quarterback Victor Martinez to Jose "Disney" Garcia.

Martinez said it was faith in his team that propelled him down the stretch on the game-winning drive.

The Toros finished the game with 194 total yards of offense.

Mike Benevidez led Nixon in receptions with six for 116 yards and one touchdown.

The Mustangs finished the game with 154 total yards of offense.

09.11.10: Alexander 3, Cigarroa 2

The most anticipated volleyball game of the week, Alexander versus Cigarroa, lived up to all the hype as both teams battled to the end in a packed house at the Cigarroa gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Alexander needed five games to come from behind and hand Cigarroa its first loss in district, 25-19, 20-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 15-4.

Alexander (4-1 29-5A, 14-4) moves into a tie with Cigarroa and United for second place with three games left in the first round of district play, while Eagle Pass is in first with a 5-0 record.

Big win for De Hoyos, Toros

Winning has a way of curing all sorts of aches and pains, and while some Cigarroa Toros are indeed hurting, the pain goes away as soon as they see that beautiful number one on the left hand side of their record.
Last season, the Toros went 0-10 after newly appointed head coach Frank De Hoyos did his best with the time allotted for him to take over the reins at Cigarroa.
Now with a full offseason to prepare, the Toros finally managed to get their first victory under the De Hoyos regime.
For the coach, though, the honor goes to his players and to his staff, who make his job on the field a lot easier.
With district play looming, the Toros feel that they have paid their dues and now it's time to collect.
"I told the kids that we paid the price last year and we worked hard from November all the way to our first game," De Hoyos said. "This year it's going to turn into a habit. We already won the first game and we hope that it's contagious.
"November was really the beginning of my program ... we are strong believers in the weight system. We started putting personnel in the right places and we are hoping that this is the beginning of something very special."
The offensive muscle on Friday belonged to quarterback Victor Martinez, who passed for 159 yards and a score and ran for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
His passes were mostly caught by Mike Benavides, who hauled in five for 123 yards and a score; he also added a rushing touchdown.
The Toros defense, which is trying to channel its inner 'Wrecking Crew' label, limited Memorial to 144 yards.
"This is the first game, and of course defensively and offensively, we looked good. But there’s still work to be done," De Hoyos said.
The extra week of rest gives the players and coaches plenty of time to get the euphoric feeling of picking up a victory to subside.
"I told the kids that now that they know how to win games, it's something that should become a habit," De Hoyos said. “Right now, we are learning how to win games. "We won our first one and it's a very special feeling and they are starting to realize that."

Week 0: Cigarroa 39, San Antonio Memorial 8

Standouts for the Toros offense was Victor Martinez, Mike Benavidez, Jose Cisneros, Sam Macias and Jesus Gomez. Defensive standouts were Jose O. Perez (TD return off a fumble), Horacio Herrera, Jesus Sanchez (INT), Jose Milera (INT), Angel Espinoza and Jose Luis Garcia (blocked punt). "The defensive team played a real good game," coach Frank De Hoyos said. "The special teams played super and the offense moved the ball." The Toros won for the first time since 2008.

Best / Worst Case Cigarroa

The Cigarroa Toros are hoping for better things in 2010 after a disappointing winless 2009 campaign. Second year head coach Frank De Hoyos as rededicated his team's offense to a smash mouth running style and he's got the biggest offensive line in Laredo paving the way. On the defensive side of the ball, Cigarroa is trying to get back in touch with its Wrecking Crew roots as it styles itself in the mold of dominant football teams from the late 80s and early 90s. The success of the team will ride on whether or not a retro approach can still win games in the second decade of the new Millennium.

BEST CASE

The Toros open their season with a road trip to San Antonio for a game against the Memorial Minutemen. Memorial hasn't won a game since 2005 and a big win here would be a strong opening statement towards a best case year.

Cigarroa then has an off week before opening district play with a game against the Nixon Tigers. Nixon went 1-9 last year and might still be working out the growing pains under first year head coach Tommy Ramirez. This game was decided by 8 points in 2009, a 14-22 loss. A low scoring game where Cigarroa's power running game eeks out the win would give the Toros a 2-0 start.

Cigarroa's third game of the season is against Martin at Krueger Field. Martin was devastated by a power running game behind a large offensive line in a pre-season scrimmage against Brownsville Porter, and Cigarroa's line is even bigger than Porter's. Martin's spread offense will keep things competitive and a high scoring shoot out between opposite offensive styles will tip Cigarroa's way in a best case scenario for a 3-0 start.

The Mavericks of Eagle Pass Winn will come to town for Cigarroa's fourth game of the season. Winn is the weakest of the out of town schools and only won 3 games a season ago. Playing the Mavericks at home will give Cigarroa the boost they need to win a hard fought game giving them a 4-0 start in a best case scenario.

The first four games are the most winnable on the schedule, and the season's difficulty will ramp up in week five when the Toros face LBJ. LBJ blew Cigarroa apart last year in a 14-42 effort. This game likely boils down to a running back duel between LBJ's Flores and Cigarroa's Macias. If the ball bounces Cigarroa's way, they could be standing at 5-0 midway through the season.

Week six will feature a very strong opponent when the Toros face the Alexander Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are expected to be one of 29-5A's playoff contenders and are probably out of reach of Cigarroa in 2010. Even in a best case scenario a win over Alexander is probably too much to expect, putting Cigarroa at 5-1.

A hard game against Alexander will be followed by equally stiff competition from United. A win here is unlikely, resulting in a 5-2 record for Cigarroa.

An October 21 game against United South will be Cigarroa's easiest game of its last five, but that doesn't make it a win. United south will likely be too much for Cigarroa to overcome, making Cigarroa 5-3 on the season.

Cigarroa will have its first road game since August on October 29 when the Toros travel to Eagle Pass. Eagle Pass should be one of the top four teams in the district and a win, especially on the road, is likely too much to expect. 5-4

Cigarroa's final game will also be the final game played at Krueger field when Del Rio comes to town. Del Rio may well have its throne as division champion locked down by this game, but don’t expect that to have them snoozing. Del Rio probably gets the best of Cigarroa en route to a postseason in the playoffs.

The best case season for Cigarroa wraps up at 5-5. The easy games all come early and Cigarroa will have to make the most of those early games as it won't have many chances later in the season to make up for early losses. A 5-5 season (4-5 in district) would put Cigarroa just outside the playoff picture, but it would have the Toros feeling good entering 2011.

WORST CASE

Cigarroa's worst case scenario would begin with a nightmarish loss in San Antonio to Memorial. If the Toros new offense struggled out of the gate and Memorial scores early, Cigarroa will not be in a very good position to make up for that lost ground and get back into the game. A worst case scenario would begin with handing Memorial its first win in five years.

If Cigarroa loses to Memorial in week one, it will be hard to predict another win for the Toros for the rest of the season. Nixon, Martin, Eagle Pass Winn and LBJ may all bring just enough firepower to outdistance themselves from a struggling Toros squad. Giving Cigarroa an 0-5 start.

Even in the best of cases, the final five games are probably out of reach. This would mean a worst case scenario would result in a second straight winless year for the Toros.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Of course, the Toros will probably fall in somewhere between the two extremes. Of those first five games I'd give them the early nod over Memorial and Martin, with Eagle Pass Winn being as predictable as the flip of a coin. Giving Cigarroa the benefit of the doubt, I'll say they turn in a three win season in 2010.
