09.18.2010: Volleyball: Cigarroa 3, United South 1

Cigarroa had a turbulent week that saw it drop consecutive District 29-5A games, but Saturday afternoon, the Toros looked like the Toros of old.

The Lady Toros beat Southside rival,United South in four games, 25-9, 15-25, 25-9 and 27-25 at the Cigarroa gymnasium.

Cigarroa (5-2 29-5A, 18-11) is two games behind district leader Eagle Pass, which is undefeated in district play, while the Lady Panthers (0-7, 7-14) are still searching for their first win of the district season.

United South had to take the court without its head coach Andrea Pierce-Garza, who is out on maternity leave due to the birth of her daughter, Madeline Jade Garza, who weighs 8 lbs, 13 oz, on Sept. 16.

Jessica Ramirez, the varsity assistant, has been named the interim head coach until the return of Pierce-Garza in a few weeks.

Cigarroa also had to take the court with a new lineup because a rash of injuries and sickness hit the team earlier in the week.

Cigarroa did a great job of adjusting without the service of their starting setters, Raquel Martinez and Dee Dee Riojas.

Stepping in to fill those shoes were senior Michelle Alvarez and junior Sandra Ambriz.

The Lady Toros did not skip a beat with Alvarez and Ambriz at the helm as they set the tone for the game with an overall offensive effort that blitzed the Lady Panthers’ defense all afternoon long.

Alvarez pulled double duty and came through on the offensive end for the Lady Toros.

United South could not find an answer for Alvarez, who had a team-high 12 kills, with five coming in the first game.

Alvarez became an offensive nightmare for the Lady Panthers, along with Deandra Gonzalez and Gloria Morales, who combined for 13 kills.
