Cigarroa and C.C. Winn entered their Saturday night District 29-5A game as a curious duo.
One team had won its past two games with final-minute scores, while the other had lost its last two by a combined three points.
Surprise, surprise, the Toros won Saturday's affair at the SAC by a single possession, with a final score of 17-10, to advance to 4-0 on the season and undefeated in district at 3-0.
The Toros are tied with United for first place in 29-5A at 3-0.
Winn remained winless and fell to 0-3 in district, 0-4 overall.
It was a defensive battle through and through.
Each team held its opponent to only seven first downs on the night and all of the scoring came early as the defenses continued to stiffen down the stretch.
Cigarroa's defense held C.C. Winn to 219 rushing yards, a large chunk of which came on an 88-yard touchdown run down the middle of the field by Mavericks running back Luvin De Leon in the first half.
C.C. Winn's only other score came on a field goal late in the first quarter after a Cigarroa fumble gave the Mavericks the ball at the Toros' 16-yard line.
Cigarroa QB Victor Martinez finished the game with 71 passing yards, completing five of 13 passes for one touchdown and throwing for two interceptions.
The junior quarterback also led the team in rushing yards and attempts with 33 yards on 17 carries.
Mike Benavidez' two catches for 32 yards and a touchdown were the most yards and catches by any Toros receiver.
